Vintage $2.50 U.S. Gold Coins Two-Piece Set

Here you have a $2.50 Gold Liberty coin designed by Christian Gobrecht, and a $2.50 Gold Indian coin, designed by Bela Lyon Pratt. ­These two 90% gold coins are dated from 1840 to 1929–a formative period in American history spanning the gold rush, Civil War, the Old West, World War I, and into the Great Depression. Both coins come from the Fairmont Reserve+ Collection of beautiful, well-preserved gold coins. That these gorgeous gold coins still exist is extraordinary when you consider that on April 5, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in an effort to fight off an economic downturn, ordered all gold coins be turned in to the Federal Reserve resulting in melting $300 million in gold coins and putting a big dent in the gold coin options for future collectors.

Gobrecht's Famous "Coronet Head" Design

The first coin in this set features the famous 1840–1907 Gold Liberty or "Coronet Head" design created by Christian Gobrecht, who served as the U.S. Mint's third Chief Engraver from 1840 until his death in 1844. The design features a large head of Liberty wearing a wide coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Her hair is pulled back in a bun and held in place by a string of pearls. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle the design. Gobrecht's fame as a coin designer lived on long after his passing as coins bearing his designs were still being struck more than 60 years later.

One Of The Shortest-Lived Series In U.S. Coin History

The second coin in this set, the 1908–1929 Gold Indian, is one of the shortest-lived series in U.S. coin history and are collector favorites today. People love the magnificent portrait of an authentic-looking Native American on the obverse and the proud Bald Eagle on the coin's reverse. But what really sets these coins apart is their recessed or incused design–which was a reverse of the normal die in that the design was pressed into the coin rather than the typical coin where the design rises outward from the coin. Designed by Boston sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, the $2.50 Gold Indian is joined by the $5 Gold Indian struck during the same period as the only U.S. coins ever issued with incuse deigns, making them two of the most intriguing American coins ever issued!
